Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter Make sure it's bubbly and active.
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat for a robust flavor.
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water Warm water activates the starter better.
  • 2 teaspoons salt Consider using sea salt or Himalayan pink salt.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can substitute with melted butter.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Feed your sourdough starter the night before to ensure it's bubbly and active.
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of your active sourdough starter, 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 ¼ cups of warm water, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently for about 5 minutes until slightly smooth.
  • Place the dough back into the bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise for 2 hours at room temperature, or until it doubles in size.
  • Gently deflate the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a parchment paper. Cover it again for an hour to allow a second rise.
  • Preheat your crockpot on high before the second rise is done. Add parchment paper to the bottom of the crockpot.

Baking

  • Carefully lift your dough (still on the parchment paper) into the crockpot. Cover with the lid, and reduce the heat to low.
  • Cook for 4-6 hours, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Transfer the bread to a cooling rack and let it cool before slicing.

Notes

Experiment with flavors by adding herbs, garlic powder, or cheese. For a sweet variation, incorporate dried fruit or honey. To make it gluten-free, substitute with a gluten-free flour blend.
