Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium head medium head of cabbage The star of the show, tender and slightly sweet when cooked.
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a lighter version) Adds richness and protein.
  • 1 onion, chopped Provides depth and sweetness.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Offers a fragrant punch of flavor.
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce Brings the dish together with its tangy creaminess.
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes Adds freshness and a burst of texture.
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Infuses herby warmth.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for balancing flavors.
  • 1 cup uncooked rice For that comforting, filling base.
  • 2 cups vegetable or beef broth Helps the flavors meld beautifully.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Carefully peel away 8-10 outer leaves from the head of cabbage. If the leaves are too thick, blanch them in boiling water for a couple of minutes until pliable.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • In your slow cooker, mix the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, rice, oregano, and broth.
  • Add the browned meat and onion mixture to the slow cooker, stirring gently.
  • Tuck the cabbage leaves gently into the mixture, letting them nestle in the sauce.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Cover and let it cook for 4-6 hours on low or 2-3 hours on high, until the rice is tender and the flavors meld beautifully.
  • Spoon into bowls and savor every hearty bite.
