Ingredients

For the filling

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage Choose your favorite blend—spicy or mild!
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour This will help thicken your gravy.
  • 2 cups milk Whole milk adds a creamy texture, but skim works too.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder For that aromatic touch.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Adjust according to your spice preference.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Sharp cheddar brings this dish alive.
  • chopped green onions Optional, for garnish and a fresh crunch.

For the base

  • 1 can refrigerated biscuits Flaky buttermilk biscuits are ideal.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While that's warming up, crumble the breakfast sausage into a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until browned, stirring occasionally.

Making the Gravy

  • Once the sausage is browned, sprinkle the flour over the sausage. Stir to combine thoroughly, letting it cook for about 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk, garlic powder, and black pepper. Keep stirring until the gravy thickens (around 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat.

Assembling the Pie

  • In a greased pie dish, layer half of the raw biscuit dough pieces at the bottom.
  • Pour the sausage gravy mixture over this layer, ensuring even coverage, and then sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.

Topping

  • Place the remaining biscuit dough pieces on top of the gravy and cheese mixture.

Baking

  • Transfer the pie to your preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and fully cooked.
  • Keep an eye on it towards the end to prevent over-browning.

Serving

  • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before garnishing with optional chopped green onions. Slice and serve!
