Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound sausage (breakfast sausage works well)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened For a lighter version, use Greek yogurt.
  • 1 can Rotel tomatoes (10 oz, undrained) Make sure to drain if excess moisture is a concern.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Sharp cheddar enhances flavor.
  • 2 cups baking mix (e.g., Bisquick) Substitute with a gluten-free baking mix for gluten-free diets.

Spices

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a kick) Adjust to customize spice level.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your sausage balls cook evenly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the softened cream cheese and sausage until smooth.
  • Mix in the undrained can of Rotel, the shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • Gradually fold in the baking mix until everything is well combined.
  • With clean hands, scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into balls.
  • Place the sausage balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Notes

For healthier alternatives, consider using lower-fat cream cheese, whole wheat baking mix, or vegetable protein.
