  • 1 tablespoon baking powder This helps the bread rise beautifully.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for enhancing flavor.
  • 3/4 cup warm water For mixing it all together smoothly.
  • Oil for frying Peanut or vegetable oil works best for that perfectly crisp finish.

For the Taco Toppings

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Use lean meat for a healthier option or vegan crumbles for a plant-based version.
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Feel free to use homemade seasoning for a personalized touch.
  • Fresh lettuce Crisp and refreshing, it adds great texture and color.
  • Diced tomatoes Choose juicy, ripe tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Shredded cheese Cheddar or a Mexican blend brings melty goodness.
  • Sour cream or yogurt Adds a creamy richness—swap Greek yogurt for a healthier alternative.
  • Salsa or avocado For extra flavor and freshness, don’t forget your favorite condiments!

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the warm water until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough gently for a few minutes until smooth.

Resting the Dough

  • Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 10 minutes.

Frying the Bread

  • In a large skillet, pour enough oil to cover the bottom (about 1/4 inch deep) and heat over medium heat.
  • You'll know it's ready when a small piece of dough sizzles upon contact.
  • Divide the rested dough into four equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it out to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Carefully place one piece of dough in the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Cooking the Meat

  • In a separate skillet, brown the ground beef or turkey over medium heat.
  • Stir in the taco seasoning and a splash of water. Simmer until well combined and heated through.

Assembling the Tacos

  • Start with a piece of fry bread as your base.
  • Pile on some seasoned meat, then add the fresh toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, and any other favorites you have.

Notes

Leftover fry bread can be stored at room temperature for up to two days. For stored toppings, keep them in airtight containers in the fridge for about 3 days. To reheat, warm the fry bread in a skillet on low, and reheat the meat in the microwave or on the stove. Creative topping suggestions include pickled jalapeños, diced onions, or fresh cilantro.
