Homemade Maple Baked Beans

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried navy beans or any small beans you prefer
  • 4 cups water for soaking
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped adds sweetness
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced for depth of flavor
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup the star of this dish!
  • 1/4 cup ketchup for that tangy twist
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard adds a nice kick
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika for a hint of smokiness
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper use freshly ground for best flavor
  • to taste Salt
  • 1/4 cup diced bacon or ham optional for a meaty depth

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Rinse and soak the dried beans in ample water for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  • Drain and rinse the soaked beans. Place them in a large pot with fresh water, covering the beans by about an inch. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer for approximately 30 minutes until tender.
  • In a skillet, sauté the chopped onions and minced garlic on medium heat until translucent and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.

Cooking

  • In a large bowl, mix together the cooked beans, sautéed onions and garlic, maple syrup, ketchup, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt.
  • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Pour the mixture into a baking dish, cover it with foil, and bake for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Once baked, remove the foil and let the beans cool slightly. Serve warm.

Notes

Leftover baked beans can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw and warm gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a little water if too thick.
