Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 pieces soft slider rolls (dinner rolls or Hawaiian rolls) The pull-apart kind makes serving effortless.
  • 8 ounces thinly sliced deli ham Choose smoked or honey-glazed for extra personality.
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese, thinly sliced Melts beautifully and balances the ham’s saltiness.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted For brushing and achieving a golden top.
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Adds a tangy lift.
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds Optional, classic club-style finish.
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder or finely chopped shallot Provides aromatic depth.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce A savory secret that ties flavors together.
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper To taste.

Optional Add-Ins and Substitutions

  • Gruyere or cheddar Can be used in place of Swiss for different melt and flavor.
  • olive oil Can replace butter for a lighter version.
  • seasoned tempeh or grilled mushrooms Can replace ham for a vegetarian option.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Slice the slider rolls horizontally while keeping them attached as a block (both top and bottom). Place the bottom half in the dish so they sit snugly.
  • Layer the ham evenly over the bottom rolls, folding slices as needed to cover every bite. Then top with the Swiss cheese in an even blanket.
  • Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese, aligning the edges. Press gently so they sit together.

Cooking

  • In a small bowl, whisk melted butter with Dijon mustard, poppy seeds (if using), onion powder or shallot, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Brush the buttery mixture liberally over the top of the rolls, letting some seep into the cracks.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 12 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 3–6 minutes, until the tops are golden and the cheese is gooey.
  • Let sliders rest for 3–4 minutes before slicing between the rolls into individual sandwiches. Serve warm.

Notes

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 325°F oven covered with foil for 10 minutes, then uncover for a minute to re-crisp. Assemble sliders in a freezer-safe dish for freezing up to 2 months. Bake from frozen at 350°F for 20–25 minutes.
