  • 6 large large eggs Use fresh eggs for the best flavor.
  • 2 cups whole milk Can substitute low-fat or non-dairy milk.
  • 6 cups bread (cubed) Stale, crusty bread works best. Consider sourdough or whole grain.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your favorite) Feel free to use a lower-fat cheese if desired.
  • 1 cup diced vegetables (bell peppers, spinach, onions, etc.) Customize based on what’s in your fridge.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon pepper Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (oregano or thyme) Consider using fresh herbs for added flavor.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine your cubed bread with diced vegetables. Toss gently.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and dried herbs until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread and vegetables. Stir gently and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.
  • Fold in the shredded cheese, making sure it’s evenly distributed.

Baking

  • Pour the strata mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and set.
  • Allow the strata to rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F or microwave individual portions.
