Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast The key to a light and fluffy texture.
  • 1 cup warm milk Helps to activate the yeast; make sure it’s warm to the touch but not hot.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adds a hint of sweetness; you can use honey or maple syrup instead if desired.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted For richness; swap with olive oil for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Balances the sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour The base for your dough; add more as needed for your desired consistency.
  • 1 large egg Adds richness and a golden color; consider a flax egg for a vegan option.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it rest for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and salt. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it in and mix to combine.
  • Gradually add 3 cups of flour to the mixture, stirring until a dough forms. The texture should be soft and slightly sticky.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • Place your dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 30 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide into 12-15 equal pieces, rolling each into a ball.
  • Cover the rolls again and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes while your oven preheats to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  • Brush the rolls with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven for an extra touch of indulgence.
