  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed You can swap with frozen if needed for convenience.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter A splash of olive oil works if you prefer.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped The onion caramelizes beautifully.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced For that aromatic kick.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Seasoning is everything!
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes Optional for a spicy twist.

Preparation

  • Rinse your green beans under cool water. Trim the ends for a neat presentation.
  • In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5-6 minutes.
  • Toss in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Add the green beans, season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired. Pour in about 1/4 cup of water to help steam, then cover with a lid.
  • Let the beans cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until they reach your desired tenderness.
  • Remove the lid and stir. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve immediately.

Notes

Feel free to add bacon for a smoky flavor, or incorporate nuts for added crunch. These green beans pair wonderfully with any Southern meal.
