Ingredients

Beef Patty Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef Use 80/20 for the perfect balance of flavor and juiciness.
  • 1 medium onion Caramelizing adds layers of sweetness to your melt.
  • 4 slices Rye or Texas toast For that perfect crunch and flavor; both options work beautifully.
  • 4 slices American or Swiss cheese Melty cheese is key – feel free to mix for extra flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter This adds richness to the bread while toasting.
  • salt and pepper Essential for seasoning the patty.
  • Optional: Pickles or mustard For an extra zing.

Instructions

Caramelizing the Onions

  • Slice the onion thinly. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  • Add the onions, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and sweet (about 10-12 minutes). Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Forming and Cooking Patties

  • In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Gently form two patties, making sure not to overwork the meat, which helps keep them tender.
  • In the same skillet, add a little more butter if needed. Increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until they reach your preferred doneness (a nice crust is key).

Adding Cheese and Onion

  • Top each patty with a slice of cheese and the caramelized onions during the last minute of cooking. This will help melt the cheese beautifully.

Preparing the Bread

  • While the patties are finishing, spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place two slices butter-side down in your skillet.

Assembling the Melts

  • Once the cheese is melted, transfer the patties with the onions onto the bread in the skillet. Top with the remaining slices of bread, butter-side up.
  • Grill each side for around 3-4 minutes, pressing down gently until the bread is golden and crispy.

Serving

  • Once toasted to perfection, remove from the skillet, let cool slightly, and slice in half. Revel in the gooey goodness that awaits!

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat, covering to help melt the cheese again while keeping the bread crisp. Use fresh ingredients whenever possible, especially onions, to enhance flavor.
