Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter For that rich, comforting base. You can substitute with olive oil for a healthier option.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour This will help thicken our gravy. Gluten-free flour works as a fantastic substitute if needed.
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth Homemade broth is best, but store-bought works well too. Use chicken broth for a lighter flavor.

Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds depth. Fresh minced garlic can provide a more robust flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder For a hint of sweetness. Alternatively, sautéed onions can give freshness.
  • to taste salt and pepper Season to your liking.
  • a pinch dried thyme or rosemary Optional herbs that can elevate the savory notes.

Cooking Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it’s foamy.
  • Sprinkle in the flour, whisking continuously to form a roux, cooking until it turns a lovely golden color in about 2 minutes.
  • Slowly add the broth, about half a cup at a time, whisking to ensure no lumps as the sauce thickens.
  • Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, stirring as the gravy simmers for about 5 minutes.
  • Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  • Once desired consistency is reached, remove the gravy from heat and serve warm.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days, or freeze for up to three months. Reheat gently on the stove, adding a splash of water or broth if needed. Sift the flour before adding it to the butter for a lump-free gravy.
