  • 6 cups apples (approximately 4-5 medium apples) Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work beautifully.
  • 1 cup brown sugar Light brown sugar or coconut sugar can be substituted.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Feel free to add nutmeg or allspice for extra warmth.

For the Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup flour All-purpose flour; almond or gluten-free flour can be used.
  • 1 cup rolled oats Quick oats can be used in a pinch.
  • 1 cup brown sugar Use remaining sugar from the filling.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Additional spice for the topping.
  • 1/2 cup butter Melted; or coconut oil for dairy-free option.

Preparation

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice your apples into thin wedges. Toss them in a large bowl with half of the brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.

Making the Topping

  • In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, remaining brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Drizzle the melted butter over the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.

Assembly and Baking

  • Spoon the apple mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • Sprinkle the crumb topping generously over the apples.
  • Slide the dish into your preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until the edges bubble and the top turns golden.
  • Let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra twist, add raisins or swap in other fruits like pears or peaches. Try adding chopped nuts into the topping for added crunch. You can reduce sugar by half for a healthier option.
